For example, 3 billion people in Asia rely on the waters of rivers originating on the plateaus of the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. High altitude communities are dependent on fragile mountain ecosystems for their food and fuel, but scarce natural resources are threatened by logging and inappropriate farming practices.
Innovative cross-sectoral approaches, supported by new and assistive technologies, are required to ensure the survival of these communities and to protect the fragile environments on which they depend. ATA aims to meet these requirements through the use of appropriate technologies which can help protect the environment and empower local communities through training, education, and economic development.
