The Problem

The high mountains of the Himalaya are tall, majestic and apparently invulnerable. This impression is however, false, and mountain regions are actually often extremely fragile and increasingly degraded environments.

ATA recognises that meaningful and long term conservation activities cannot be achieved without the full and active participation of the local communities who make their home in these complex environments.

Because the economic mainstay of the majority of these mountain communities is agriculture, ATA works to address the needs and concerns of local farmers through carefully tailored approaches designed to increase agricultural production without compromising the environments surrounding the settlements.
