Qinghai forms part of the enormous Chinese Loess Plateau and soils are generally extremely fine, forming smoothly rounded hills that lie at altitudes of between 2,500 - 4,500 meters above sea level.
To the east, the smoothly rounded hills are dissected by deep perennial and seasonal water courses of varying size.
